HS 46

Handmade goods, bought at wholesale scale.

The commercial question in handicrafts is rarely whether the product is good. It is whether the two hundredth piece matches the first, and whether it arrives unbroken. Both are answerable before you order, and both are worth asking about.

What we can source

Product groups in this category.

Woven basketry

Rattan, water hyacinth, seagrass, and pandan. Baskets, storage, bags, and homeware.

Wood carving and turnery

Decorative and functional pieces, from bowls and boards to sculptural work.

Ceramics and stoneware

Tableware and decorative pieces, with glaze consistency as the usual variable.

Textile crafts and accessories

Hand-woven and embellished goods produced by artisan groups.

What to specify

The details that decide the price.

A supplier who cannot answer these cannot quote. Sending them up front is the single fastest way to get comparable numbers back.

Dimensions and tolerance
Handmade means variation. Agree an acceptable tolerance rather than a single number, and put it in writing.
Material
Fibre or wood species, and how it is treated. Untreated natural fibre behaves differently in a dry climate.
Finish and colour
Natural, dyed, stained, or lacquered. Colour consistency across a batch is a genuine constraint with natural materials.
Consistency control
Ask how they check pieces against a master sample. The answer tells you a lot about whether a large order will go well.
Moisture and treatment
Natural fibre and wood need drying and, in some markets, fumigation before entry.

Commercial considerations

  • Production is often distributed across artisan households, so capacity scales differently from a factory — more people, not more shifts.
  • Lead times lengthen sharply during religious holidays and harvest periods, when artisans are unavailable.
  • Minimums are usually per design; several designs in one order is often easier than a large run of one.
  • Ask for a master sample and keep it. It is the reference for every dispute later.

Packaging

  • Individual protection for fragile items, then master cartons. Under-packing is the most common cause of loss.
  • Nesting where the design allows — basketry that nests transforms the freight cost.
  • Fumigation or heat treatment for natural fibre and wood into many markets.
  • Confirm carton dimensions and units per carton for container planning.

Certifications buyers may request

  • Fair trade certification, where the buyer requires it
  • SVLK for wood-based items, depending on product and destination
  • ISPM 15 treatment for wooden packing material
  • Fumigation certificate for natural fibre goods into some markets

Certifications listed above are ones buyers commonly ask for. They are not a claim that any particular supplier holds them. We record what each supplier actually holds, and say plainly what is missing.

Sourcing context

What affects your timeline.

  • Many producers are cooperatives or village groups. Verification at that scale focuses on the coordinating organisation rather than each household.
  • Stated capacity assumes all artisans are available. Confirm the specific month you need, especially around holiday periods.
  • Handmade variation is a feature to your end customer and a risk to your quality control. Deciding the tolerance early prevents most disputes.

Common export routes

Where this category usually ships.

HS codes are the classification your customs broker already uses. Labelling everything this way means nothing is lost between the quote and the shipping documents.

How suppliers are checked

You see the level, not just a badge.

L1

Documents checked

Business registration (NIB), tax ID (NPWP), and any certifications collected and cross-checked for consistency with the company identity given to us.

L2

Capability confirmed

Production capacity, lead times, packaging, and export experience confirmed in a direct call with the person responsible.

L3

Seen in person

Production site visited in person, with dated photos and notes filed on record. Given only when the visit actually happened.

Before you ask

Include these and quotes come back faster.

Each missing item is one more round of email before a supplier can put a number on paper.

Questions buyers ask

About sourcing this category.

How is consistency handled across a large order?
By agreeing a master sample and a written tolerance before production. We ask each supplier how they check against it — the specificity of the answer is itself informative.
Can designs be customised?
Often yes, within what the material and technique allow. Expect a sample stage, and expect some designs to be declined for good technical reasons.
How is breakage in transit handled?
Prevented rather than compensated. Ask specifically about internal packing, and pay for better packing on a first order — it costs less than a damaged container.
